Genetics of the Shepherd German coat colors
Concerning the GSD and German Shepherd color coat, the breed standard, OAS says: "the color of the GSD is itself not important and has no effect on the character of the dog or its ability to work and should be a secondary consideration why." The final color of a young dog can only be established when the envelope was developed. »
All things adverse to try to eliminate and to consider a German Shepherd Dog, coat color should be at the bottom of the list. Good pigment should be sought after but many factors such as health and temperament, just to name a few, should be much more important that the color of the layer that should always be subordinate to the structure, process, type and nature, and should never have precedence over the working capacity of the dog. The color of the eyes should be dark and pigment nose should be black.
Regards the mantle of mantle of German Shepherd, SV race standard stipulates that: "normal (stock) coated GSD must carry a thick Undercoat and the envelope should be as dense as possible, consisting of straight hard close lying hairs." Hair on the head and ears, legs, feet and toes is short. On the neck, it is longer, thicker, some males forming a slight ruff. Hair grow longer at the back of the legs down as pastern and the stifle and formed relatively thick trousers on the hindquarters. There is no hard and fast rule for the length of hair, but short mole-type coats is defective. ""No good dog is a bad color"– Max von Stephanitz (founder of the German shepherd dog race) concerning the Shepherd German coat colors
Ask almost anyone to describe a German Shepherd Dog, and they will almost always mention marks "saddle Back." Also, it is also possible for the GSD to be United as a black colour (solid white is regarded as a disqualification for conformation to demonstrate by the AKC) or sand. Sand German Shepherd color coat are readily identifiable by multicolored individual hairs on the body. Sand GSD may also be masked by dark or Black Guard hairs.
For the German Shepherd coat color profiles can include any of the following: black tan, black & red, black & Cream, white solid black, solid, (considered a conformation disqualification), sand (also called agouti or wolf gray, in various colours), black & silver, liver (rare - lack of conformation) and blue (rare - considered as a fault of conformation).
It is preferable to rich pigmentation, color wise. While I will dive deeply into the science of Genetics (do not hesitate to do so on your own if interested), just know that liver colour comes from recessive paired black series and blue occurs from recessive paired in the dilution series.
German Shepherd coat colors and GSD inheritance is very complex and is controlled by several sets of genes. Here is a very brief description and a summary of the various sets of genes in responsible GSD of color based on information from of "the dog German Shepherd: A genetic history" and "Genetic practice for dog breeders", both by Malcolm Willis. Both of these books should be regarded as serious required for any fan of German Shepherd reading and more importantly, for farmers. Another proposed resource today is "German Shepherd" by Winifred Strickland and James "Jimmy" Moses.
THE AGOUTI SERIES
The body of the German Shepherd basic color is controlled by genes. The order of colors for the German Shepherd mantle dominance is as follows: golden sand, sand grey marked black saddle and tan, bicolor * black and tan (bicolor is where the dog only tan legs and face, not on the body) and black.
In addition, know that the black recessive gene in all the colours of the GSD.
Solid black German shepherds, bred to black solid German shepherds will only produce black. The colours of sand are dominant on the other colors and patterns of the German Shepherd breed.
BLACK SERIES
This gene controls the formation of black pigment on the DSG, not hair color. The order of colors of mantle German Shepherd of dominance is exactly as follows: black pigment, including the nose, truffle and trim; Carrier for the color of the liver; Nose colours black, Brown of liver - brown colour, eye rims and toppings.
Note: most distributors are considered black pigment, including the nose, truffle and buffers.
WHITE SERIES
White coat color in the German shepherd dog is recessive to all other colors. To obtain a white coat color in the German Shepherd, both parents must wear the white gene (i.e. White themselves or be carriers). The order of dominance is as follows: melanin is produced. (The colours of the GSD standard have this); Partial Albinism (not seen). White coat with dark eyes and nose (pas albino); Yellow coat collar (proposed).
COLOR SERIES
This non-black staining intensity control. The order of dominance is as follows: tan lighter (cream); Intermediate Tan (tan); Darkest tan (red).
Series of colour intensity determines whether GSD with color (i.e. non-recessive black or all white) will be black and cream, black & tan or black & red.
GSD coat lengths
Short-coated German Shepherd maintain a short coat lies close to the body.
These dogs are generally less Undercoat.
"Plush" Coated s GSD have a coat of medium length with a thin, mellow underground.
These dogs were not any contour as in long coated GSD.
Long coated German Shepherd have much longer fur around their ears on the backs of their legs, chest and tail (feathering) than other German Shepherd.
DILUTION SERIES
This controls how intense the black pigment will appear on your German Shepherd.
The order of dominance is as follows: Dense pigment. Blue dilution.
Pigment black, combined with the blue dilution will produce a blue coated German Shepherd that looks as if it had a dusty reflection or flour.
MASK SERIES
Control or not mask appear on your German Shepherd. The, order of dominance is as follows: a black mask on his face. coat dark with pas de mask. Brindle (rare, will be treated as streaks on the legs). Disable tan.
All these genes put together determine colors from your own coat German Shepherd.
